Our Story
Gunther Werks was created to explore what the air-cooled 911 could become if remastered with modern engineering and materials. The goal was never to replicate the past, but to evolve it — to preserve the analog connection between driver and machine while improving every measurable aspect of performance and design.
The company’s name pays tribute to Gunther Wendt, the NASA engineer known for his exacting standards during the Apollo program. His precision and discipline embody the values that guide every project: purpose, integrity, and an uncompromising attention to detail.
The 993, the final air-cooled generation, provides the foundation for that vision. It marked the end of an era, but for Gunther Werks, it was the beginning of a new one. Founder Peter Nam wanted a car with the analog driving feel and emotional connection of the original 911, refined through contemporary methods. The 993 offered a platform to explore what the car could become if re-engineered to modern standards without losing its soul.andards without losing its soul.
Each commission begins with a complete teardown to the bare chassis and a full re-engineering from the ground up. Steel gives way to carbon fiber — lighter, stronger, and shaped with purpose. Interiors are developed in close collaboration with each client, guided not by nostalgia but by intent and function.
When Peter set out to create Gunther Werks, he was met with skepticism from investors and industry veterans who said it couldn’t be done. Nearly all turned him away. Rather than discouragement, those rejections became his fuel. As a quiet nod to that beginning, the company key was designed in an “X” pattern — a symbol of every door that closed, and the unwavering vision that opened another path forward.
Gunther Werks’ journey began in 2017 with the Coupe, a re-engineering of the Porsche 993 into a 435-horsepower, rear-wheel-drive machine that redefined the balance between power and control. It was followed in 2020 by the Speedster program — 25 commissions that distilled the analog experience to its purest, open-air form. Building on those foundations, the company introduced the GWR (Gunther Werks Race) platform in 2023, the epitome of naturally aspirated technology and the next evolution of its design and engineering philosophy. The GWR underpins the current Turbo program, which explores forced induction while maintaining the mechanical engagement of an air-cooled motor, and the forthcoming F-26, which pushes design and performance into new territory.
Gunther Werks is vertically integrated, designing, engineering, and manufacturing most of its componentry in the United States to maintain complete control over quality and precision. Every new development — with the exception of the motor — is designed to be backward compatible with earlier commissions, allowing owners to benefit from ongoing innovation.
Gunther Werks builds are not restorations. They are modern evolutions — machines shaped by engineering discipline and human connection.
